If you’re planning a stay in Lagos, choosing between a hotel and a shortlet usually comes down to more than price.

How long you’re staying, who you’re travelling with and the kind of space you need can all change which option makes more sense.

So, before you book, it helps to look at the full cost and not just the nightly rate.

When does a hotel make sense?

A hotel can work well if you’re travelling alone, staying for a night or two, or simply want somewhere straightforward to sleep and move on.

You check in, stay, check out. Simple.

But if you’re staying longer or travelling with more people, the cost of multiple rooms, meals and other extras can start to add up.

When does a shortlet make more sense?

A shortlet can be a better fit if you want more space, you’re staying for several days, or you’re travelling with family or friends.

You may also have access to things like a living area and kitchen facilities, which can make longer stays feel more comfortable.

And sometimes, being able to make your own breakfast instead of ordering everything is a win for both your stomach and your budget.

Compare the full cost

Don’t compare a hotel and a shortlet using the nightly price alone.

Check what is actually included. Ask about WiFi, power, cleaning, breakfast, caution fees, extra guest charges and any other costs that may come with the stay.

The cheaper option at first glance is not always the cheaper option by the time everything is added together.

Which one works for your trip?

There isn’t one answer that works for everyone.

If you’re staying briefly and travelling alone, a hotel may be enough. If you want more space, you’re staying longer or travelling with other people, a shortlet may make more sense.

The better question is not simply “Which one is cheaper?”

It’s “Which one gives me better value for this trip?”
